教学目标与要求:

       本课程专为英语基础较好并已修习过英汉/汉英连续传译的法律翻译和法律语言学研究方向的硕士研究生开设,主要目的在于培养学生的法庭口译实战技巧与能力。开设本课程的另一目的在于传授与法庭口译研究和实战相关的知识。要求学生具备一定的刑法和刑事诉讼法知识,课前预习、课上集中精力做好口译实践、课后多做听力和记忆力训练。

教学内容:教师讲授的知识性内容主要包括口译前的知识与技能准备,法庭口译的历史,民事与刑事庭审过程,法庭话语的特点,法庭口译的过程,影响口译质量的因素,以及法庭口译员的素质、道德、规范、角色、功能等。法庭口译实践主要围绕着听力训练、记忆训练、笔记训练、视译训练、连续传译和同声传译等几个方面进行。

评估:

40%的成绩取决于学生在课堂上口译实践和参与讨的表现;

60%的成绩取决于期末考试:期末考试包括英译汉和汉译英两部分,学生口译的结果将被录音,然后加以评估。  


Course Description for Advanced Court Interpreting

 

Course Code:

Course Title: Advanced Court Interpreting

Academic Credits: 2

Prerequisites:  Legal Translation Practice, C-E/E-C Interpreting

Requirements and Objectives:

This course is designed for legal translation and forensic linguistics postgraduates who already have taken the course of oral interpretation in their undergraduate years and have obtained high-level fluency in both Chinese and English. The course is designed both to develop the students’ interpreting skills and to increase their knowledge in the field of court interpreting. It treats court interpreting as a profession and discusses the interpreter’s role and function, specifically in judicial settings. The general purpose of this course is to familiarize students with interpreting as it is performed in courtrooms and other legal settings. It is designed to complement the course in written legal translation.

 

Teaching Content:

Instructors will offer curriculum regarding history of court interpreting, qualifications of the court interpreter, ethics for the court interpreter (the do's and don'ts), court procedures, legal terminology, structure of a criminal/civil case, aspects of court room discourse, the process of interpreting, skills required, situational variables that affect the production and interpretation of courtroom discourse, the court interpreter's communicative competence as influenced by situational factors, etc., and will discuss interpreter tools and methodologies. This course will focus in great detail on the three modes of interpretation; simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation and sight translation.

Assessment:

40%: Students will partly be evaluated by their involvement in the discussion and interpreting practice.

60%: They will also be assessed with an in-class final examination in the 18th week by means of recording their interpreting of two given materials, one C-E and the other E-C.
