Why I Chose Legal English as My Major
2013年12月15日 刘先颖

After the college entrance exam, there comes the even more breathtaking process of applying for universities and majors. Should I enter the majors most profitable in the working field or those best suiting me? What kinds of majors could secure me a more promising future? Such questions are asked for thousands of times by anxious students and their parents. Looking at my family in August 2012, however, you would only be greeted at a scene of tranquility and coziness. That’s because I had efficiently finished my application form the moment it was handed to me. I signed in the “Major” column a big determined “Legal English” which was the optimal choice decided long before. I love English as well as law, and thus I chose Legal English.

My love for English could be traced back to my third grade in elementary school when I was for the first time exposed to this brand-new language. My English teacher then——a torchbearer in my English-learning road——was a real sweet angel from heaven. She was so gentle and tender that every word flowing from her rosy lips enchanted me, though they were totally unfamiliar to me. Her charm was the original source of motivation in my way of learning English. I kept day and night practicing speaking as fluent and beautiful English as her. Difficulties as I confronted, I found myself gaining even more momentum. With time flying past the motivation gradually shifted from the previous “angel” to a sense of accomplishment from conquering countless barriers and setbacks. From elementary to junior school to senior high, I kept assuring myself that learning English would be my lifelong project. Thanks to years of efforts, I ran all the way to the eve of College Entrance Exam safe and sound..

In contrast to the history of my love for English, the history of my loyalty for legal science is much shorter, but no weaker. It is a lecture that evoked my interests in this course.

A month before the College Entrance Exam, my school held a series of lectures delivered by nationwide university professors. Among them the lecture titled “Law and Society” by a professor of Peking university impressed me most. I remembered till now how he ended his speech. “You, the growing generation, are China’s future; you, the future constructors, are this nation’s hope. Though we live in an age of peace, we strive for greatness rather than settle on obscurity. But what would make us stand out in this increasingly secular world? Commitment. Commitment to where you are needed. In 1980s’ China, we needed inventors, designers, architects and workers. But in the material-rich presence, we need well-educated new blood devoted to establishing a more democratic and law-oriented society. We need civilized legal system builders and social order inspectors. And they are among you. They will arise from you.” These words transformed my attitudes toward law——the previously dullest subject in the world. If law serves as a sharp sword, penetrating through devil and uphold justice, why can’t I act as a knight to sway the sword? Why not be one of the builders or inspectors for my beloved homeland? How could I shape myself into a qualified legal professional? And most painfully, if I switch my ideal major to law, what am I going to do with my favorite English?

For the next few weeks I was baffled by these questions tremendously; meanwhile, having known my interest in law, my parents made lots of efforts consulting relevant agencies and friends working in legal field to help me make a final decision. To our relief, on June 10——two days after the College Entrance Exam——we were informed that in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies there was a school for business English and English of international law. How perfect a combination it was! Without hesitation I wrote that university GDUFS and that major “Legal English” on the form.

It has become a trend among undergraduates to choose the profit-prioritized majors such as economic and managerial subjects. Some students may find themselves competent in those fields; but more usual are the cases that they lack motivation and passion to push them to the end. I feel grateful that I knew what I want from an early time, and that the choices of my peers never swayed mine. I chose what I love; I persevere in what I chose.
