This term I have audited the classes of journalism for the second major. Many people asked why I study journalism instead of something related to my own major, Business English. In fact, I think it is my interest, responsibility and ideal that leads me to do it so that I can learn more about it.
Concerning about the reason of why I study journalism, first I will turn to my interests. Among my various interests, writing and sharing information with others are the two I focus on. As sharing information and writing skills is a must for a journalist, studying journalism does me a good favor as it can help me to be more professional. Also, I have been interested in TV programs such as the news for a long time and I really wonder how they come out. In this situation, the classes for journalism include a lot of professional knowledge to feed my curiosity, which not only increase my knowledge but make me happy attending them. All in all, why I study journalism relates a lot with my interest.
Furthermore my ideal on exploring new findings and get as more as understanding about it results me in studying journalism. Once being a reporter or being involved in journalism, I can have a lot of chance to contact the world on the ground. Communicating with the world, reporter is really a job that can provide me the fresh scenes and, my understanding on different aspect of the whole society will be strengthened through it. Journalism is a tool and entrance for me to be admitted in that area, where I can have a better understanding and get the hang of my own thinking about the society. There is no doubt that journalism is a good carrier to train rational thinking and broaden one’s horizon, so journalism becomes a pre-requisite major that I must study.
In addition, my responsibility on the vulnerable groups, those who do not have enough power to use legal way protecting them, counts a lot in my choice of studying journalism. In my opinion, a journalist can reflect the society on almost every side including the unfairness, which makes me think that study journalism is a must. I was born in a poor village where people know little about outside rather than deal with the unfairness from the society. There was a time when one of my neighbors, a poor worker who cannot get the salary from the building contractor, had no way but to threat the contractor by jumping from a building to kill himself. Under the conciliation from the government, he finally got the pay. But this event touched me a lot. I think I have the responsibility to help those people know more about their rights and exposure those unfair things so that the public and government would know it. Journalist has the ability to let people know every side of the society. We have the obligation to help others in our own way so I believe that studying journalism can help me to take my responsibility and do more for my people.
It all adds up. All above mentioned are reasons on why I study journalism. The future is uncertain but at least I know what I do at this period and why I want to fight for it. That’s enough, right?
